A photographic material comprises a polymeric film support and optionally a subbing layer or layers and then a layer of a water-soluble salt of an acrylic acid/alkyl acrylate copolymer containing no free carboxyl groups the ratio of alkyl acrylate to acrylic acid being from 1 to 9 to 1, and in said layer a silver halide. Alkyl acrylates specified are methyl to decyl acrylates and usually the ammonium salt is used. In the examples, a polystyrene, polyester, polycarbonate or cellulose triacetate support, which may be subbed with a 50/50 mixture of iso- and normalbutyl methacrylate and then with cellulose nitrate and finally with a 75/25 mixture of ethyl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer, is coated with a layer containing gelatin, the copolymer salt and silver halide. An epoxy hardener, for example bis (2, 3 epoxypropoxyethyl) ether may also be added to the copolymerizable layer.
