1,016,194. Oil break switches. J. L. GRATZMULLER. May 20, 1963 [May 25, 1962; Oct. 12, 1962], No. 19941/63. Heading H2B. In a circuit breaker comprising a plurality of series connected breaking chambers each of the kind described in Specification 975,137, the fracture of any of the tensioned operating rods 5, Fig. 1 (not shown), results in the corresponding piston 11 moving under the fluid pressure beyond its on position so as to leave the cylinder 3 and knock off a cover 12, to vent the cylinder 3 and thus through the fluid system 9 to vent all other cylinders 3 and open all other contacts. In a modification the piston 11 remains in the cylinder but uncovers a vent in the wall thereof. Two separate breaking chambers may be mounted on a single insulator column 4, Fig. 2 (not shown), and controlled by a single insulating rod 5 through linkages or gearing. Hydraulic dampers ensure that upon fracture of any rod 5 all contacts, including those associated with the fractured rod, will open substantially simultaneously.
