Abstract

1,016,008. Direct injection engines. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. Oct. 30, 1962, No. 41081/62. Heading F1B. A piston head 10, Fig. 1, is so shaped as to divide the combustion space at T.D.C. into an ignition chamber 14, containing a spark plug 18, and a residual space 15, an injector 19 being so inclined that fuel is injected, at or near B.D.C., towards the part 9 of the piston which, at T.D.C., defines the ignition chamber 14. In Fig. 3 the ignition chamber is provided by a recess 31 extending right across the piston; alternatively the recess may be circular. In Fig. 7 the ignition pocket 56 is formed by an upstanding ridge 55.
