In a window regulating mechanism, particularly for cars, a fixed support 27 carries two levers 23, 24 pivoted at fixed points 28, 29 and attached at their ends to a carrier member 22 that supports the window A, a spring 35a being arranged to counterbalance the weight of the window. A connecting arm 34 pivotally connected at one end to the lever 23 has at its other end a handle 36 constrained to move in an arcuate slot 36a during operation of the mechanism. An actuating member 32 pivoted about a shaft at 33 has arranged at its top end a releasable pawl mechanism that engages with a serrated track 33a for locking the window in any adjusted position. Initial movement of the handle 36 in either direction releases the pawl so that further movement of the handle 36 adjusts the window position. In a modification (Figs. 12-16, not shown) the handle 36 and the arcuate slot 36a are replaced by a conventional crank handle connected to a shaft at 33, to which shaft is attached the actuating member which is in turn connected to the connecting arm. The actuating member is attached to the shaft by way of a "lost motion" device containing either bell crank levers or a sliding member acting on a toothed segment so that the window is locked at any adjusted position and is released during the initial movement of the handle. In saloon cars where the vertical movement of the window is constrained between guides in the door, the bottom lever 24 can be omitted and lever 23 bent upwards at the end connected to the window to pivot and slide in a slotted member attached to the bottom of the window. An embodiment is also shown for a rear quadrant window which pivots about one corner. The window may be operated manually or by an electric motor.
