1,015,272. Cathode materials and processing. "PATELHOLD" PATENTVER WERTUNGS- & ELEKTRO HOLDING A.G. Sept. 25, 1963 [Sept. 27, 1962], No. 37709/63. Heading H1D. An incandescent cathode includes a support of tantalum, molybdenum, or tungsten/rhenium alloy, having an emissive coating containing tungsten, carbon, and thorium oxide, the coating having a mean grain size of approximately 1 Á, and containing not more than 2% of thorium oxide. The coating applied to the support may be separated from it by a galvanically applied diffusion-inhibiting layer of rhenium, and may consist of tungsten carbide containing thorium oxide, or a mixture of tungsten carbide and thoriated tungsten, or a layer of thoriated tungsten covered by a layer of tungsten carbide containing thorium oxide, or a layer of thoriated tungsten or thoriated tungsten/tungsten carbide mixture covered by a layer of carburized thoriated tungsten. The coating is applied, as a powder of grain diameter about 1 Á, by spraying, brushing, dipping, or electrophoresis from solution, and is subsequently melted or sintered in vacuum and, after incorporation in a discharge tube, activated by heat treatment. The applied powder may alternatively contain thorium nitrate and sugar, which yields thorium oxide and carbon upon heating.
