Abstract
947,999. Cathode materials and processing. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 3, 1960 [March 6, 1959], No. 7567/60. Heading H1D. In a method of manufacturing a nickel support for the electron-emissive layer of an oxide cathode, which support contains inter alia magnesium as impurity, oxygen is caused to diffuse into the nickel from the non-emissive surface portions, during heating at 1000 to 1200 C., until the magnesium present in the nickel has been bound by oxygen throughout the greater part, but not the whole of the thickness of the support. The nickel support may contain 0.05 to 0.06% by weight of Mg, 0.0101/0 Si, 0.02% Fe and 0.01% Mg, the emissive layer comprising equal parts of barium and strontium oxides. If the support is tubular, having a wall thickness of 0.1 mm., oxygen may be caused to diffuse into it by passing air therethrough and heating at 1100 C. for 20 mins., the outer surface of the tube, which is later coated with emissive material, being kept in an inert atmosphere of nitrogen, or in a reducing atmosphere. Alternatively, the non-emissive surface portions may be provided with a 0.1 mm. layer of nickel oxide, from which, during heating at 1100 C. for 10 mins, in an inert atmosphere or in vacuo, oxygen is liberated and diffuses into the nickel. The nickel oxide layer also insulates the cathode from its associated heater and the heating process can coincide with the activation of the emissive layer after mounting the cathode in a discharge tube.
