Abstract

Compositions suitable for use as fire-resistant hydraulic fluids and metal working oils consist essentially of water-in-oil emulsions containing 0.1-5.0 wt. per cent of oil-soluble calcium petroleum sulphonate and 0.1-5.0 wt. per cent of a calcium soap of naphthenic acids having a M.W. of at least 275, the oil portion of said emulsions being a hydrocarbon oil of 50-400 SUS viscosity at 100 DEG F., the water content of the emulsion being 10-50 wt. per cent, and the ratio of sulphonate to naphthenate being from 5/95 to 95/5 by weight. White oil is particularly suitable as the oil portion. The composition may contain free Ca(OH)2 as excess over the amount required to form the basic sulphonates and naphthenate. The soap and/or the sulphonate may be produced in situ. Specification 1,015,071 describes similar compositions in which the calcium soap is replaced by at least one Na, K, NH4, Li, Sr, or Ba soap of the same naphthenic acids.
