Abstract

Compositions suitable for use as fire-resistant hydraulic fluids and metal-working oils consist essentially of water-in-oil emulsions containing 0.1-5.0 wt. per cent of oil-soluble calcium petroleum sulphonate and 0.1-5.0 wt. per cent of at least one Na, K, NH4, Li, Sr or Ba soap of naphthenic acids having a M.W. of at least 275, the oil portion of said emulsions being a hydrocarbon oil of 50-400 SUS viscosity at 100 DEG F., the water content of the emulsions being 10-50 wt. per cent, and the ratio of sulphonate to naphthenate being from 5/95 to 95/5 by weight. White oil is particularly suitable as the oil portion. The composition may contain free Ca(OH)2, and free hydroxides of the soap forming metals or ammonia, as excess over the amounts required to form basic sulphonate and naphthenate respectively, and in an example a mixture of octylated and styrenated diphenylamines is present as antioxidant. Specification 1,015,072 describes similar compositions in which the naphthenate soap is calcium naphthenate.
