Description

Patented Jan. 16, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RUST PROOFING 01L Delaware No Drawing. Application December 17, 1929 Serial No. 414,818
4 Claims.
This invention relates to a non-staining rust proofing oil, consisting of mineral white oil in which naphthalene is incorporated.
The white oils which we use in our invention 5 are prepared from heavy gas oil or light lubricating oil distillates by intensive acid treatment. Such oils usually come on the market under various trade names such as Nujol, Acto, Wirol, etc. We add a small amount of naphthalene to the white oil and dissolve it by agitating. In some cases it is advantageous to apply gentle heat to the mixture whereby the naphthalene is more readily dissolved. The amount of naphthalene added may be approximately 2%. However, in many cases considerably less naphthalene will be suificient while in other cases it is desirable to incorporate more, for example 4% or more, up to 643%.
The compositions just described are simultaneously non-staining and rust preventing, and
for this reason they can be advantageously employed as rust proofing oils on such metallic surfaces as come in contact with fabric. Thus they can be used for lubricating the needles of the 5 knitting machines, for preserving surgical or dental instruments and other delicate tools.
The selection of the white oil base is an important factor and should be made according to the white oil has a viscosity of -250 seconds at 100 F. on the Saybolt Universal viscosimeter.
3. A non-staining and rust proofing liquid composition comprising approximately 98% of a mineral white oil of 140-470 seconds viscosity at 100 F. on the Saybolt Universal viscosimeter, and
approximately 2% of naphthalene.
4. A non-staining and rust proofing liquid composition consisting of mineral white oil and naphthalene.
