Abstract

A fuel composition consists essentially of a petroleum oil distillate having a initial boiling point above 300 DEG F. and containing at least 10 per cent of cracked stock, and a small proportion of at least one oil-soluble primary aliphatic amine having a tertiary carbon atom attached to the amine group. Amines referred to are 2, 4, 4-trimethyl-2-amino-pentane, t-C12-15 H25-31NH2 and t-C18-24H37-49NH2. The composition may also contain surface active agents, such as oil-soluble phosphates. e.g. those obtained by esterification of C5-C13 oxo alcohols; alkyl phenol sulphides, e.g. the alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salt thereof, such as barium and calcium tertiary octyl phenol sulphides, and their reaction products with phosphorus sulphides; sulphonates and naphthenates such as alkali and alkaline earth metal oil-soluble sulphonates and naphthenates such as sodium and calcium petroleum sulphonates, and ammonium petroleum sulphonates; phosphatides such as leoitheins; and phosphosulphurized petroleum hydrocarbons, for example those obtained by reacting a phosphorus sulphide with lubricating oil stocks, especially bright stock, high molecular weight paraffins, aromatics, cyclic aliphatics, alkaryl compounds, petrolatums, waxes and solvent extracts of petroleum fractions; the phosphosulphurized hydrocarbon may be stabilized by treating with basic or unsaturated compounds, details of which are given. The oil may consist of 30 per cent catalytically cracked stock, 50 per cent thermally cracked stock and 20 per cent virgin stock; the oil may also contain minor proportions of residual hydrocarbons.
