In a vertical smoke-tube hot-water boiler having a gas inlet chamber 4 arranged below the smoke-tubes 8 and directly adjoining a downward flow combustion chamber 3 there is positioned in the gas flow between the combustion chamber and the gas inlet chamber a multi-row grid of cooling tubes 5, the object of which is to cause the gases flowing through the grid to be thoroughly mixed and cooled. The tubes of the grid may be extended vertically to form part of a tube wall that shields the smoketube boiler casing 7 from radiation from the combustion chamber. The tubes of the grid may also be arranged to project into the combustion chamber.
