Abstract

1,013,701. Belt tensioning. S.K.F. KUGELLAGERFABRIKEN G.m.b.H. Aug. 20, 1963 [Aug. 25, 1962], No. 32970/63. Heading F2Q. In a belt tensioner comprising a roller 7 mounted on a spring steel arm 2 and engaging a belt 8, movement of the roller in a direction normal to its axis of rotation is restrained by a spring-urged friction damper 14. Bearings 10, 11 in a casing 5 carried by a bracket 4 on the arm 2 support the roller 7, a spring 12 acting through the outer race of the bearing 11 to press the cup-shaped friction damper 14 against a friction surface 1 of a fixed structure. To adjust the force urging the friction surfaces together, which force is always substantially less than the tensioning force exerted by the arm 2 on the belt, the damper 14 may have alternative axial locations in a sleeve 13. Alternatively, the spring 12 may act directly on the damper 14 (Fig. 4, not shown). In Fig. 5, the damper comprises a rivet 17 on the arm 2, which is held between the two arms of a spring clip 18 rotatably mounted on the fixed structure. The friction surfaces may be made of, or coated with, material having a high coefficient of friction.
