Abstract
1,013,043. Conductors. A. E. NEWMAN. June 25, 1962, No. 22675/62. Heading H1A. An increase in the effective resistance of a conductor at high frequencies due to the " skin effect " may also be accompanied by a still further increase in high frequency resistance due to magnetic coupling between adjacent strands of a conductor or adjacent turns of a coil. This " proximity effect " may be overcome by coating the conductor or its individual strands with a magnetic material, e.g., particles of iron, iron oxide, permalloy, ferrites or natural magnetite in a varnish or resin binder, to form only a partially effective magnetic shield. The point of optimum reluctance of the conductor between totally effective magnetic shielding and no shielding may be obtained by coating individual strands of the conductor forming them into bunches and giving a further coat, and continuing this procedure until a single coated conductor is obtained. The permeability of the magnetic material may be controlled by passing a current through the conductor or its strands during the coating process to orientate the particles, and polymerization of the resin coating may be effected either by passing the conductor through an oven or by passing a current through the conductor.
