Abstract

The recovery of unsaponifiable matter including tocopherols and/or sterols from a vegetable oil deodorizer distillate is facilitated by adding to the lime soap mass containing said unsaponifiable matter and formed on saponifying said distillate a powdering agent in a quantity sufficient to cause break-up of the mass, which is then extracted with a selective solvent in which the lime soap is insoluble and the unsaponifiable mass is soluble. The powdering agent, which is a colloidal or finely divided, oil absorbent, abrasive, inorganic solid insoluble in said solvent and inert relative to the components of the lime soap mass, is added to the mass before it sets into a hard gel, the moisture content of the mass being below 5% by weight when the agent is introduced. Powdering agents referred to are colloidal calcium silicate, colloidal sodium silico-aluminate, finely divided alumina, colloidal silica and colloidal titania. The agent can be introduced into the mass during its formation (i.e. with the addition of the calcium ion bearing reagent such as an inorganic calcium salt to the alkali-saponified sludge) and at the solvent extraction step, but is preferably introduced after the mass has been subjected to a partial drying operation prior to the extraction. The concentration of the agent in the mass preferably lies in the range of 3 to 21% by weight. After extracting with the selective solvent, the solution may be separated from the mass and the solvent removed to form a concentrate of sterols and tocopherols. Alternatively, after separation and, if necessary, concentration, the solution may be wintered at a low temperature whereby sterols are crystallized therefrom and separated leaving a solution of tocopherols. In either case the powdering agent may be recovered from the lime soap mass, e.g. by acidifying with a dilute mineral acid to give a fatty acid fraction and an aqueous fraction and separating the powdering agent from the latter. Examples are given, and comparative examples illustrate the effect of too much water being present in the lime soap mass on the addition of the powdering agent.
