Abstract

Theobromine is recovered from its aqueous solutions by adsorbing it on clay from an aqueous solution having a pH not substantially greater than 8.5. Caffeine, if present, is also adsorbed on the clay at the same time. The theobromine may be removed from the clay by desorbing it with an aqueous solution having a pH not substantially less than 10.5. If caffeine is present, the alkaloids may be separated by preferentially desorbing one of them and then the other, the theobromine being desorbed as above and the caffeine being desorbed by a non-chlorinated organic solvent of relatively high dipole moment or with a mixture of such solvents or of such a solvent with other organic or inorganic solvents. Examples are given which illustrate (a) the effectiveness with which theobromine is adsorbed on clay from solutions, the pH values of which are less than 8.5; (b) the effect of pH variation on such adsorption; (c) the effectiveness with which both caffeine and theobromine can be adsorbed on clay; (d) the desorption of theobromine from clay by trisodium phosphate and sodium hydroxide solutions of varying pH values; (e) the ineffectiveness of caffeine desorption by these solutions; (f) the desorption of caffeine from clay by various solvents and solvent mixtures; (g) the ineffectiveness of theobromine desorption by these solvents; and (h) the effectiveness with which theobromine and caffeine can be adsorbed on clay from their aqueous solutions and then separated and recovered independently by preferential desorption. In the above examples, various grades of fuller's earth are specified for use as adsorbent. Solvents specified for desorbing caffeine are methyl and ethyl alcohols, acetone, methyl acetate, pyridine, aniline, piperidine, ethanolamine, diethanolamine and mixtures of methyl alcohol and acetone, methyl acetone, trichlorethylene dichlormethane or chloroform and of methyl alcohol, acetone and methyl acetate, dichlormethane, chloroform or water. The application of the invention to cocoa waste extracts or to the mother liquor remaining after crystallisation of part of the theobromine from such extracts, is described with reference to an accompanying flow sheet. The process is applicable where the theobromine in the cocoa waste extract is in the form of a metal salt, e.g. where the extraction has been carried out in presence of lime or other alkali, the theobromine being adsorbed as free alkaloid.
