Abstract
1,011,441. Electron guns. KENTUCKY ELECTRONICS Inc. July 16, 1963 [Aug. 20, 1962], No. 28174/63. Heading H1D. In an electron gun assembly the tubular cathode 40, Fig. 8, in sliding fit engagement at its larger end 82 with a cathode base sleeve 42 which has a portion 92 of reduced diameter where it is fixed to a ceramic ring 44. The arrangement is such that a reduced portion 84 of the cathode is spaced from the sleeve 42 where the sleeve engages the ceramic ring. As shown, the sleeve 42 has a shoulder 90 and an outturned lip 94 engaging opposite sides of a reduced portion 96 of the ceramic ring. The ceramic ring is held in a mounting ring 46. The cathode base sleeve 42 is made of non-electron emissive material or is provided with a non- emissive coating 43 and the ceramic ring is formed with a ridge 98 and a valley 100 to avoid the formation of a leakage path. Holes 95 are provided in the cathode base sleeve for testing the spacing between the cathode 84 and the first grid 52 by the throughput of air during assembly. The grid 52 is corrugated, the corrugations permitting, where the grid engages the support ring 46, the escape of heat. The escape of heat is also facilitated by supporting the flat central portion of the grid by webs from the main body of the electrode. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, the first grid 20 is positioned relative to the cathode by a ceramic spider 80. In all embodiments the gun includes a second grid which may be planar or frusto-conical and complementary to the grid 52 shown in Fig. 8.
