Abstract
<PICT:1011384/C4-C5/1> An electroluminescent device comprises, between electrodes 16 and 24, a ceramic layer 18 with phosphor particles 20 embedded in it, and a layer 22 of a non-vitreous, low - temperature cure, resin which may, or may not, contain phosphor. Excessive heating of the phosphor is thus avoided on application of the second dielectric layer 22. The phosphor may be a copper activated ZnS, mixed with a powdered glass frit and applied as a suspension in isopropyl alcohol or hexylene glycol, at 100 mg./sq. in., and fused by heating to 675 DEG C. The resin layer 22 may be a thermosetting polyester, epoxy, acrylic or silicone resin, cured at below 200 DEG C., possibly below 100 DEG C. The electrode 16 may be tin oxide of a thickness to give a resistance of 500 ohms per square, on the glass base 14, and the electrode 24 may be vapour-deposited aluminium.
