Abstract

798,503. Electroluminescence. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 15, 1954 [Dec. 9, 1953], No. 34324/53. Drawing to Specification. Class 39(1). An electroluminescent lamp comprises two electrodes (one transparent) enclosing a light producing layer which consists of phosphor and dielectric materials, and a material of higher dielectric constant than that of the light-producing layer is provided between the latter and one of the electrodes. The higher dielectric material may be one or more of magnesium oxide, the rutile and anatase forms of titanium dioxide, calcium, barium or strontium titanate, and mixed titanates, e.g., barium strontium titanate all being white solids which are efficient reflectors of light. The conducting electrode alongside the high dielectric layer may be graphite. The light producing layer is made as thin as possible, preferably with the ratio of electroluminescent material to dielectric material between 1:1 and 10 : 1. They may be applied as an intimate mixture or in powder and liquid forms respectively.
