Abstract
<PICT:1080641/C4-C5/1> A light intensifier comprises a layer of fluorescent material having indentations therein and provided with an electrode on the ridges of the indentations and a covering layer of a photo-conductive material, an electroluminescent layer and a photo-transparent electrode. The intensifier may be sensitive to X or g -rays. A light intensifier is built up of a lead-containing glass support 1, a transparent tin oxide electrode 2 sprayed on to the support, an electroluminescent layer 3 comprising, ZnS [Cu, Al] bonded with an epoxy resin, an insulating or semi-conducting opaque layer 41 of black paint, a current diffusing layer 42 of a powder of non-linear resistance, e.g. a mixture of cadmium sulphide and chloride bonded with an epoxy resin; a fluorescent layer 50, e.g. ZnS [Ag] bonded with an epoxy resin or polystyrene having parallel grooves 52 therein; and a photo-conductive layer 7, e.g. a mixture of CdS and Cu Cl. An A.C. source is connected to the device by lead 10 to layer 2 and by lead 8 to electrodes 6 formed by silver paint on layer 50. The layer 7 may fill the grooves 52 whilst circular or spiral grooves may be used. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the grooves 52 are replaced by circular pores whilst the electrodes 6 may take the form of a net. The materials forming the various layers may be sintered rather than bonded by an adhesive. X-rays incident on layer 7 pass through it and produce orange light in layer 50 which excites the photo-conductive layer 7.
