Abstract

<PICT:0986029/C4-C5/1> An electroluminescent cell for use with D.C. has a helerogeneous phosphor 12 composed of an intimate mixture of an electroluminescent phosphor material and a conductive transparent material uniformly dispersed in a plastic dielectric matrix, and two conductive layers 11 and 13. A photo-conductive layer may be provided between the phosphor and one of the conductive layers, and the cell may be surrounded by a flexible case 18, 19. The phosphor 12 may be a magnanese-activated zinc sulphide or a zinc sulphide-zinc oxide activated by copper, manganese, lead or silver, mixed with particles of electrically conductive transparent glass, e.g. glass paper dipped in metal salt solution, fused and crushed, and embedded in e.g. cyanoethyl cellulose plasticized with cyanoethylphthalate.
