Abstract

872,100. Electroluminescence. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 26, 1957 [Sept. 29, 1956], No. 30190/57. Class 39(1). [Also in Groups XXIII and XXXVI] An image intensifier (Fig. 2) comprises a glass support 1, a thin transparent conductive layer of tin oxide, an electroluminescent layer 3 30Á thick consisting of 20 vols. zinc sulphide and 80 vols. of a lead free glass enamel of specified composition, a thin layer 4 of black glass, a photoconductive layer 5 500Á thick consisting of a mixture of 80 parts by vol. cadmium sulphide activated with 2 x 10<SP>-4</SP> gram atoms of copper and 1.9 x 10<SP>-4</SP> gram atoms of gallium per gram molecule and 20 parts by vol. of a glass enamel, and a thin transparent aluminium layer 6. The pores of the photoconductive layer are filled with an epoxy resin which may also be used to form a protective layer around the device as a whole. The method of producing the photoconductive layer is described in detail (see Group XXXVI).
