Abstract

<PICT:1006356/C4-C5/1> An electroluminescent device comprises a phosphor-bearing (e.g. ZnO+ZnS, or ZnS with Cu, Cu+Pb, Mn, or Cu+Mn as activators) dielectric layer of cyanoethylated polyvinyl alcohol 1. The device may have a glass plate 3, transparent (e.g. tin oxide) layer 2 and a metal plate 4 of e.g. aluminium, copper or silver, which may be applied as a molten spray. The glass plate 3 may be replaced by a metal film, e.g. Cu, Al, Au, Ag, 24-96 <\>rA thick, to give a flexible device. The phosphor-polymer layer may be 0.005-0.01 inch thick, conductive layer 2 0.0001-0.0025 inch thick, and conductive layer 4 about 0.025 inch thick.
