Abstract
774,093. Electroluminescence. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 30, 1953 [Nov. 28, 1952], No. 33240/53. Class 39(1). An electroluminescent device has a layer of solid insulating material interposed between the phosphor-dielectric layer and one or each of the two conductive electrode layers and the dielectric material when applied is dissolved in a solvent which has no action on the insulating material. In Fig. 1, a glass plate 1 which may be curved has a conductive coating 2, e.g. of an oxide of tin, cadmium or indium alone or in combination, a superimposed layer 3 of nitrocellulose applied dissolved in amyl acetate, a further layer 4 of zinc sulphide-zinc oxide phosphor activated by copper or manganese with lead or silver as secondary activators, dispersed in methyl cellulose and water or in polystyrene and xylene, a layer 5 similar to layer 3 and a conductive film 6 of aluminium or graphite. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a single insulating layer of aluminium oxide dispersed in a binder is formed on the conductive layer next to the support, followed by the phosphor-dielectric layer as before. Specifications 567,184 [Group XL] and 717,169 are referred to.
