A silencer comprises a pipe 12 passing through a casing 10 divided by partitions 13 into annular chambers 14 connected to the pipe through perforated zones 15 in each of which the total area of the perforations is at least equal to the pipe cross-section, the perforated zones being preceded by unperforated zones 16. A baffle may be provided across the pipe 12 in the most upstream perforated zone 15.
