An exhaust system comprises a catalytic device 3, of the construction disclosed in parent Specification, situated in or immediately adjacent the exhaust manifold 2, and a non-catalytic silencer 5 connected in the exhaust pipe 4. At low speeds all the exhaust gases pass through the catalytic chamber in the device 3 whereas at higher speeds some of the gases by-pass the catalyst chamber.
