Abstract
<PICT:1011138/C4-C5/1> In the production of fuel gas by the reforming of hydrocarbons the temperature of the reformed gas supplied to the shift converter is regulated by passing a controlled portion of the gas through a waste heat boiler to cool and returning this portion to the remaining gas before introduction into the shift converter. The temperature of the gas may thus be reduced from between 800 DEG and 850 DEG C. to between 350 DEG and 400 DEG C. Figures 2 and 3 illustrate alternative forms of apparatus. Reformer 1 releases hot gas both through outlet 6 to waste heat boiler 7 to cool, and through pipe 8 to shift converter 9, the relative amount being controlled by butterfly valve 21. In Figure 2 the effluent gas from the shift converter passes through upper section 12 of the waste heat boiler and in Figure 3 through steam superheater 23, and thence in both figures to scrubber 14 and out of the plant.
