Abstract
1,011,065. Liquid piston engines; hydraulic turbines. T. W. SHAUGHNESSY. Oct. 9, 1963 [July 12, 1962], No. 22411/62. Addition to 867,001. Headings F1B and FIT. The engine of the parent Specification, in which a turbine wheel 3 is driven by hydraulic fluid forced through the turbine shaft 2 from the space beneath the pistons 7, is modified in that the shaft extends through both ends of the engine casing 10 and the turbine wheel 3 is formed with chambers of different diameters to obtain variations in turbine speed. The hydraulic fluid is compressed on the downward stroke of piston 7 through an air cushion above the fluid level 23 and is forced through perforations 5 into the turbine shaft 2 from which it is directed into the turbine wheel chambers through orifices under the control of a sleeve valve 20. A non-return valve 17 permits return of hydraulic fluid from the space 4 to the chamber beneath the piston. A spark plug comprises a single electrode 22 from which the spark flashes over to the wall of a recess in the piston.
