In a swash plate-type motor or pump, pressure balancing is effected by pressurizing a liquidfilled chamber 25, Fig. 6, surrounding the swash plate ends of the cylinders, at a pressure intermediate the inlet and delivery pressures, e.g. half the sum of the inlet and delivery pressures. This pressure may be provided by a stepped piston having faces at one end connected to the inlet and delivery ports, and a face at its other end connected to the casing, the areas of the faces being suitably proportioned. In a reversible motor embodiment, Figs. 6 and 8, controlled by a four-way servo valve, the valve plate 19 is fixed and has relieved portions 57, 58 adjacent the cylinder block connected to the low pressure side of the motor, to improve biasing of the cylinder block. To compensate for tilting of the cylinder block, the cylinder ports may be tapered axially. In a variable output pump embodiment Fig. 15, the valve plate 122 is angularly adjustable relative to the cylinder block by manual or hydraulic means. The stepped piston controlling the pressure in chamber 135 is housed in casing end 125. Valve plate 122 is balanced by grooves 138, 139, Fig. 18, connected to inlet and outlet ports 137, 136, respectively, by channels 143, 146, Fig. 19. Further balancing is effected by apertures 153, 154 connected to the outlet port and to an annular groove in the cylinder block face, and by radial grooves 147, 148, 149 and 150.
