Abstract

1,008,924. Charging coke ovens. HOUILLERS DU BASSIN DU NORD & DU PASDE-CALAIS, and SOC. INDUSTRIELLE DE LILLERS. April 28, 1964 [May 6, 1963], No. 17531/64. Heading F4B. Apparatus for charging horizontal coke ovens comprises a movable hopper 1 of asymmetrical contour with a circular rim 4, associated with a telescopic shoot 9, a tubular obturator 17 suspended by a rod 16 and disposed within a cylindrical protector 13 connected by brackets 11 and 12 with the hopper wall 2, and a pneumatic cylinder 25 having a piston rod 23 connected by a cable 19 to the rod 16. Compressed air is supplied through pipe 30 from a source 31 and a branch pipe 33 has shut-off valves 34 and 35 and an electrovalve 36 connected to a switch 37 associated with a counterweighted feeler 42 released when the hopper charge falls below it. Spaced catches 43 and 44 on the cable actuate a switch 45 controlling a vibrator 46 in the hopper wall 3. The sleeve 9 has actuating arms 47 extending in gas-tight manner through a smoke box 49 which is raised by the horizontal portions 50 of the said arms 47. The smoke box has an offtake 51 connectable to a smoke extractor unit, and a flange 52 seating on the rim 53 of the charging hole 54. A hand wheel in sleeve 56 enables the manual emergency operation of the obturator 17. In operation, when the charge falls below the counterweighted flap 42 releasing it and actuating switch 37, valve 36 moves to the venting position, air escaping through cock 35, shutting off the air intake in the cock 34. Obturator 17 moves downwardly until its flared portion 18 contacts the lower hopper portion 6, whereupon the sleeve 9 can be raised into the obturator ultimately raising the smoke box 49 also.
