Abstract

391,218. Testing valves. V I D A L, C. H., St. Andrew's Works, Slough, Bucking- hamshire, and LUCAS, Ltd., J., Great King Street, Birmingham. Oct. 22, 1931, No. 29368. [Class 135.] A device for testing the fluidtightness of internal-combustion engine and similar valves comprises a hollow body part a adapted to make a close joint with the part around the seating fitted with means for pressing the valve on its seat and associated with means for producing a vacuum in the part a together with an appropriate indicator. In the form shown in the Figure, the body a is fitted with a packing ring b for engagement with the part c and is fitted internally with a pressing member d, the outward movement of which is limited by a stop ring f. The member d has a central aperture for the passage of air and is loaded by a helical spring l which also acts on a piston h provided with a packing ring i. The piston-rod j has a manipulating head k and has graduations marked thereon so that when the head is depressed and released the device is held against the part c and the rate of return or the final position of the piston gives an indication of the tightness of the valve. The piston rod may be fitted with a vacuum gauge. In a modification the body a is fitted with a pressing member secured to a diaphragm and a separate push actuated exhausting device is coupled by a pipe to the chamber a.
