Abstract

1,008,905. Refrigerating. TRANSTHERMOS G.m.b.H. Aug. 16, 1963 [Aug. 18. 1962], No. 32539/63. Heading F4H. An enclosure 1 is cooled by the evaporator 2 of a closed evaporating-condensing system the condenser 5 of which is cooled by blocks 6 of solid Co 2 , a circulating pump 11 being provided in the system. The blocks 6 are immersed in a liquid 7, e.g. the higher alcohols or methylene chloride, in an insulated tank 4 having double walls which form the condenser 5. When it becomes necessary to defrost evaporator 2 or when it is desied to heat the enclosure, valves 12 and 13 are operated to connect a heat exchanger 14 in the circuit in place of the condenser 5 and pump 11. Heat exchanger 14 is associated with a heat source, e.g. a vehicle exhaust, ambient air, an electric heater or the cooling water circuit of a vehicle, and now functions as the evaporator of the system with former evaporator 2 as the condenser. The vapour from the evaporating Co 2 may be used to provide the power for the pump 11 and for a fan 3 in the compartment, in which case the vapour is led from the tank 4, heated and expanded in an expansion machine (Fig. 2, not shown). The cooled, expanded Co 2 may be supplied to the compartment 1 or to its insulation.
