Abstract
1478908 Motor vehicle refrigeration systems G C JEFFREYS 20 Aug 1974 [12 Sept 1973] 36635/74 Heading F4H [Also in Division H2] A motor vehicle refrigeration system includes means for powering the system from either an a.c. or a d.c. electrical power source, the a.c. source being a normal mains socket, e.g. in a garage and the d.c. source being the vehicle battery 64 and a d.c. generator 65. As shown in Fig. 1, the system includes an evaporator 32, a first compressor 36 connected to an a.c. source 50, a second compressor 38 in parallel with the first compressor and connected to a d.c. motor 54, a condenser 20, a receiver 24 and an expansion valve 28. In other embodiments, the receiver may be omitted; or a second condenser may be disposed in the circuit, one adjacent each compressor. The system also includes a fan 68 for blowing cooling air over the compressor 38 and the motor 54, a pressure control switch 56 for the d.c. motor, a thermostat 52 for the a.c. compressor, and a main control switch 66 for directing which circuit is operational. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, only one compressor is provided, the a.c. power supply passing through a rectifier 222. The systems are preferably used with ice cream vans (Figs. 5, 6 not shown) which require the systems to be operational both when the vehicle is stationary in a garage or when the vehicle is moving. A heater 226 is provided in the control circuit to prevent the lid of the ice cream cabinet in a van from freezing shut.
