Abstract
743,888. Refrigerators. BIDDLE, Ltd., F. H. Oct. 5, 1954 [Oct. 8, 1953], No. 27714/53. Class 29. Relates to cooling units, for the storage chamber of a mobile installation, comprising a panel 5 mounted in an opening in the chamber wall and supporting a casing 1 having inner and outer chambers 3, 2 containing resrespectively a refrigerant evaporator 19 and air circulating fan 20, and an internal combustion engine, a refrigerant compressor 8, a condenser 11 and a fan 10 for cooling the condenser and the compressor, the fan 10 also being driven by the engine. According to the invention an electric motor 9 is provided for driving the compressor 8 and fan 10 when the vehicle is stopped and external power supply is available. Fan 20 can be coupled to the fan 10 or can be driven by an auxiliary electric motor 21 receiving current from a storage battery 55 which also supplies current to the engine's starter motor. The evaporator is defrosted by hot gas from the compressor and any condensate formed is evaporated in a heat exchanger 58 disposed near the engine to receive heat therefrom. During refrigeration, liquid refrigerant from the condenser flows through a coil in heat exchanger 58 to be pre-cooled by refrigerant vapour.
