In an electron gun comprising a concave cathode 5 and an apertured anode 7, different elements of the electron emissive surface of the cathode 5 about the axis of the cathode have different centres of curvature (dotted lines) but the centres of curvature of all elements of the cathode lie in a plane normal to the axis, and the centre of curvature of any element lies on the side of the axis remote from the element. The electron gun can be employed in a Klystron, a reflex Klystron, a travelling wave tube or a retarding field oscillator. The electron gun may also comprise one or two focussing electrodes 2.
