Abstract
A flexible coated abrasive employs a backing fabric woven from hydrophilic fibres of cotton and hydrophobic fibres of isotactic polypropylene, linear or branched polyethylene, polyester, or high tenacity nylon, the proportion of hydrophobic fibre being such (e.g. 10-50%) that the fabric is not made brittle when a strength-imparting, normally embrittling, material is applied to the fabric before coating with abrasive grains. The strength-imparting material may be glue, phenol formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde, melamine, polyester, epoxy or polyurethane resin; the fabric may be first saturated with a solution of the resin. The fabric may be heated near to the softening point of the hydrophobic fibres to bond the yarns together. Specification 909,210, and U.S.A. Specifications 2,184,896, 2,291,873, 2,389,655 and 2,983,593 are referred to.ALSO:A fabric for coating with abrasive is woven from cotton fibres and hydrophobic fibres or isotactic polypropylene, linear or branched polyethylene, polyester, or high tenacity nylon, the proportion of hydrophobic fibre being uch (e.g. 10-50%) that the fabric is not made brittle by the application of glue or resin. The fabric may be heat treated, either relaxed or on a tenter, near the softening point of the hydrophobic fibres to bond the yarns together. The warp or weft may be entirely cotton, or plied or blended yarns of cotton and hydrophobic fibre may be used as warp and/or weft. The hydrophobic constituent may be monofil, multifil, or staple fibre. Specifications 909,210, USA 2,184,896, 2,291,873, 2,389,655 and 2,983,593 are referred to.
