Abstract

An abrasive coated belt comprising a cloth backing having substantially equal stretch in the direction of its cross and warp threads respectively and having a layer of abrasive grain bonded thereto, is produced by finishing a cloth web under approximately the minimum practical tension in the warp direction required for finishing, coating the finished cloth web with abrasive, cutting the web into sections and joining the sections together to form a sectional abrasive coated belt in which the warp threads of the sections are disposed at an angle to the running direction of the belt. The sections may be prestretched in the cross direction, or in both the cross and warp directions so that the coated belt may have a maximum stretch in the cross direction of about 7%. The backing may have substantially equal tensile strengths and equal residual stretch in the cross and warp directions or may have minimum finishing prestretch in the warp direction. The cloth web may be finished under sufficient tension in the cross direction that the finished cloth has a maximum cross stretch of 10% and a minimum cross tensile strength of at least 130 lb./inch width so that the sectioned belt may have the same maximum strength and minimum tensile strength in the running direction. The cloth web may be of a sateen, e.g. 5-harness sateen, jean or drill weave and may be resin-finished with, for example, an ethyl cellulose-modified phenolic resin.ALSO:A process for making a backing material for use in an abrasive coated belt comprises finishing a cloth web under approximately the minimum practical tension in the warp direction required for finishing, to provide a finished cloth web that has substantially equal stretch in the warp and cross directions. The finished cloth web may have substantially equal strength in the warp and cross directions. The web may be finished under tension in the cross direction e.g. by tentering, to provide a finished cloth web that is prestretched in both warp and cross directions and may have a maximum cross stretch of 10% and a minimum cross tensile strength of at least 130 lb/inch width. The cloth web may be of a sateen e.g. 5-harness sateen, jean or drill weave and may be resin finished with, for example, an ethyl cellulose-modified phenolic resin.
