Abstract

In producing a papermaking machine belt, fabric is woven from synthetic resin yarns that contract upon increase in temperature and elongate on passing from a dry to a wet condition and is heat treated at a temperature high enough to cause substantial shrinkage thereof while the yarns are under a sufficiently low tension to remove substantially all residual shrinkage therefrom, and the belt is formed either by weaving the fabric in tubular form or by weaving it flat and thereafter joining the ends to form an endless belt. The fabric may be treated with resin to bond the warps and wefts where they cross and such treatment may involve applying at least one resin to the yarns of the fabric, drying the fabric, curing the resin and then heat setting it, and the heat treating of the yarns to remove residual shrinkage may be performed during the resin treatment. The tension applied during the heat treatment of the belt fabric is substantially less than that imparted to the belt in use and may be of the order not exceeding 3.2 lbs per inch width of the fabric.
