Abstract

1515522 Abrasive-coated fabric NORTON CO 16 July 1975 [24 July 1974] 29748/75 Heading C4V [Also in Division D1] A coated abrasive material comprises a woven polyester fabric which has been hot stretched, provided with an adhesive layer on the front and abrasive grains attached to the adhesive layer and has a specified elongation profile in the warp direction and a cover of 75 to 97%. Preferably the material is formed into an abrasive belt. The fill elongation per unit load is greater than the warp elongation. The fabric may be given a prefinish selected from polyacrylate, polyvinyl alcohol and phenol formaldehyde before it is hot stretched on a tenter at 435 or 475‹F. It is then coated on one side (the back side) with an aqueous composition of bisphenol A-formaldehyde, an acrylonitrile/methyl methacrylate acrylamide copolymer and calcium carbonate, dried and coated on its front side with a mixture of phenol formaldehyde, bisphenol A-formaldehyde and calcium carbonate. The order of coatings may be reversed. The front side is then coated with a maker adhesive selected from phenol-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, epoxy resin and polyurethane and including calcium carbonate. Abrasive grains of aluminium oxide, silicon carbide, garnet, fused alumina-zirconia or mixtures thereof are applied electrostatically and/ or by gravity and the fabric heated, sized and cured. The fabric may be woven from staple fibre and/or continuous filament yarns of polyethylene terephthalate, poly 1,4-cyclohexane dimethanol terephthalate or polyethyleneoxybenzoate and be a plain weave, twill or sateen.
