Abstract

Adhesive compositions comprise a propylene polymer at least the major proportion of which is in the syndiotactic configuration. Preferably the polymer contains no stereoregular structure other than syndiotactic. The compositions may be used for bonding glass, metal, wood, ceramic, leather, rubber and synthetic resin articles, and particularly for making twistless yarns and non-woven fabrics from glass, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, isotactic polypropylenes, viscose rayon, acrylic and polyacrylonitrile fibres.ALSO:Natural, inorganic and synthetic thermoplastic articles may be bonded under pressure and/or heat with a propylene polymer at least a major proportion of the structural units of which are in syndiotactic configuration. Cohered, twistless, filamentary yarns may be prepared by applying to multifilament yarns a solution of syndiotactic polypropylene and drying and in Example 1 multifilament yarns of glass, nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, isotactic polypropylene, viscose rayon, acrylic and polyacrylonitrile filaments are treated with a n-heptane solution of syndiotactic polypropylene, passed through squeeze rolls and dried by heating to form cohered, twistless, multifilament yarns. Paper-like fabrics may be prepared by calendering webs of fibres treated with or incorporating syndiotactic polyproylene. In examples carded webs of (2) fibres of the materials specified in Example 1 treated with powdered syndiotactic polypropylene and (3) fibres spun from mixtures of isotactic and syndiotactic polypropylene are calendered between steel rolls at 130 DEG C and 3 tons per square inch to form paper-like fabrics.
