Abstract
1,008,086. Reciprocating pumps and compressors. DE LAVAL TURBINE Inc. Aug. 3, 1962, No. 30065/62. Headings F1A and F1N. In a liquid pressure-actuated diaphragm pump, e.g. for radio-active liquids with suspended solids, or gases, comprising a driving diaphragm or bellows 156, Fig. 3, and a pumping diaphragm or bellows 186, both of stiff material, e.g. metal, and connected by a liquid column 172, the return movement of driving diaphragm 156 is effected by the static pressure of the liquid column in a stand pipe 164. Part of the column comprises a heavy liquid 168, e.g. mercury, and the rest, a lighter liquid 170, e.g. water. In the embodiment shown, two pumps each with tenden inlet and outlet valves are arranged in parallel and their driving diaphragms 156 are actuated alternatively by pressure liquid, e.g. oil, supplied by a pump 23 and distributed by a slide valve 28, Fig. 2. Valve 28 is reciprocated by a motor 2, Fig. 1, acting through a crank 10 and slide 16. When valve 28 is in its left-hand position shown, one diaphragm 156 receives pressure liquid via ports 40, 46, 42, 78, ball valve 74 and conduit 98, whilst the other diaphragm 156 exhausts via conduit 96, ports 52, 56, 60 and conduit 69. Reversal of valve 28 results in supply of pressure liquid via ball valve 76 to conduit 96 and exhaust of pressure liquid from conduit 98 to conduit 67. The output of the diaphragm pumps may be varied by varying the output of pump 23 and the rate of reciprocation of valve 28. A heat exchanger 174 is provided on conduit 172.
