A device for varying the volume of discharge of a reciprocating piston pump comprises a regulating chamber 3, Fig. 1 having a pair of spaced diaphragms 4, 5 defining an auxiliary variable volume chamber 9 therebetween connected by a line 15 to control means 10 for varying the amount of liquid in chamber 9, the device also includes apertured abutment elements 6, 7 which with diaphragms 4, 5 form chambers 8, 11 and abutments 6, 7 when contacted by diaphragms 4, 5 during the suction and pressure strokes respectively prevent flow of liquid through the elements 6, 7 and thus result in flow past the inlet and outlet valves in suction and delivery lines 25, 27. The control means 10 comprises a calibrated vessel 12 containing liquid subjected to gas pressure at 11 and having stop valves 20, 21. Chamber 11 is connected to a pressure source which may be enclosed compressed gas or the chamber is connected by a line to either the suction or delivery line 25, 27. When pumping corrosive liquids the chamber 8, Fig. 3 is bounded by a diaphragm 67 and contains a constant volume of neutral liquid. In a further modification the thrust elements 36, 37, Fig. 10 are mounted in the auxiliary chamber 9 which is connected by channels 41 to a liquid-filled chamber 40 the capacity of which is controlled by a diaphragm 42 positioned by a compressed air operated piston 74 and a set screw 71. The maximum capacity of the pump is reached when both diaphragms 4, 5 simultaneously abut elements 36, 37. In a further modification two out of phase pistons 2, 2<SP>11</SP>, Fig. 7 driven from a common shaft the auxiliary chamber 9 is formed by connecting together by line 15 the liquid-filled chambers on that side of diaphragms 4, 5, remote from abutments 6, 7, line 15 also being connected through shut-off valves 20, 21 to reservoir and a pump 68.
