Abstract

1,093,670. Diaphragm pumps. NEW YORK AIR BRAKE CO. Sept. 13, 1966 [Oct. 12, 1965], No.40780/66. Heading F1A. The pulsations of an elastomeric element 32 drawing liquid through a check valve 23 into a pumping chamber 18 and delivering through a check valve 24 are produced by a plunger 45 reciprocated by a crank mechanism. The expansion of the element portion 31 is variable by means of an adjustable sleeve 49 which controls the communication between the interior of the element 32 and a liquid reservoir through plunger passages 46, 47. The position of the sleeve (49), Fig. 2 (not shown), is adjustable by means of a rotatable threaded rod (52). The element 32 in the collapsed condition bears on a cylindrical filter element 42 formed of helically coiled metal wire. The upper shoulder 35 of the element 32 is inclined towards the inlet and outlet passage 19 to direct gases released from the pumped liquid from the pumping chamber to the passage. The integral sealing rings 36 and 37 formed on the element 32 are clamped between the parts 12, 13, 14 of the pump casing 11.
