Abstract

1361742 Reciprocating pumps ARMCO STEEL CORP 15 Feb 1972 [16 Feb 1971] 6962/72 Heading F1A A washing system for the plunger 36 of a pump for abrasive liquids, e.g. well drilling fluid, comprises a wiping gland 42 surrounding the plunger with a suitable clearance to promote wash liquid flow and having annular recesses containing openpore foam, clean wash liquid being supplied to the wiping gland via a check valve 60 at a pressure greater than the pump suction pressure during the pump suction stroke, and valve 60 closing during the pump discharge stroke to maintain a change of cleaning liquid in the gland 42 which is slowly discharged with the liquid pumped. The clean wash liquid supply line incorporates a pump, Fig. 6 (not shown) regulated by a by-pass circuit, a flowmeter and a surge chamber. The pump cylinder is secured to a manifold with inlet and outlet valves, Fig.1 (not shown) by a clamp 30, and plunger 36 is secured to an actuating rod by a clamp 40. The plunger may have spring-loaded packings 52, plain packings, Fig. 5 (not shown) or may be a close fit without packings.
