[Also in Division G3] In a modification of the automatic carding plant according to the invention of the parent Specification, the fibre supply means is provided with a surplus tuft-receiving return shaft from which the returned tufts may be directly returned to the distributing or circulating duct without passing through a nip and a heating apparatus which therefore receives only the tufts initially fed into the system. Fresh tufts are automatically fed according to a demand determined by a measuring device located at the inlet end of the circulating duct and producing an electric control signal whereby the armature voltage of an electric motor (driving devices for supplying fibre to the feeder) is regulated through a magnetic amplifier. In the feeder shown, unused fibre returns to a shaft 20 having a perforated wall 21 escape of air through which to a shaft 23 is regulated, according to the air pressure within shaft 20 as it fills from the bottom with fibre, by pivoted weighted flaps 22. Delivery rollers 24 withdraw the fibre but release it, before it can be seized by the beater 18, to be conducted over a cleaning grid 19 to suction duct 3 and returned to the circuit. Air escaping into shaft 27 is returned through a dust filter 25 to outlet 26 of beater 18 and used as the medium for conveying fibre through the circulating ducts. In a modified feeder, Fig. 4 (not shown) the outlet of the discharge funnel of shaft 20 is adjacent the beater 18, the rollers 24 are omitted, and the fibre-laden air is not filtered before return to the circuit.
