Abstract

A toxicant solution comprises by weight (a) 70 to 75% of an ether of a mono-, di- or tri-alkylene glycol, 5 to 25% HEOD (1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 10-hexachloro-6, 7-epoxy-1, 4, 4a, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8a-octahydro-exo-1, 4-endo-5, 8-dimethanonaphthalene) and 0 to 20% of a phenol- or alcohol-alkylene oxide condensate containing an average of not more than 10 alkylene oxide units per molecule, or (b) 65 to 85% of a carboxylate of a mono-ether of a mono-, di- or trialkylene glycol, 5 to 30% HEOD and 0 to 20% of a phenol- or alcohol-alkylene oxide condensate containing an average of not more than 10 alkylene oxide units per molecule or (c) a modification of (b) wherein up to 90% by weight of the carboxylate is replaced by an ether of a mono-, di- or trialkylene glycol. The HEOD is conveniently employed in the form of dieldrin. Suitable ethers for the compositions of the invention, preferably monoethers, are the alkyl ethers such as methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, n-butyl and hexyl ethers, and also aryl, alkaryl and aralkyl ethers. The ethers may be those of mono-, di- or tri-ethylene, -propylene and butylene glycols. Specified ethers are triethylene glycol monobenzyl ether, triethylene glycol monomethyl ether and monoethylene glycol monoisopropyl ether. The carboxylate compounds preferably contain a carboxylate group having not more than six carbon atoms, e.g. acetate, propionate and butyrate. Specified carboxylates are the acetates of monoethylene glycol monoisopropyl ether, monoethylene glycol monobenzyl ether and triethylene glycol monobenzyl ether. The alkylene oxides from which the condensates are derived are preferably the lower oxides, e.g. ethylene, propylene or butylene oxide. Suitable phenols for the condensates are monohydroxybenzene, resorcinol, cresols and other alkyl or dialkyl phenols, particularly alkylphenols in which the alkyl group contains 4-12 carbon atoms; suitable alcohols for the condensates are monohydric primary, secondary or tertiary alcohols containing 6-20 carbon atoms, e.g. lauryl, cetyl, oleyl and 2-ethylhexyl alcohols and also aralkyl alcohols, e.g. alkylbenzyl alcohols. Mixtures of different alcohols or different phenols may be used in forming the condensates. Condensates specified are those of octylphenol with ethylene oxide and an oleyl alcohol-cetyl alcohol mixture with ethylene oxide.
