To facilitate the severing of a yarn extending from a yarn guide on a circular machine and to avoid it becoming engaged with the butts of the welt bits carried by the welt dial, a ring 16 is provided at the edge of the welt dial and is attached to rotate with the dial bed and extend beneath the outer edge of the dial cam cap 14. The outer rim of the ring 16 has upstanding teeth 18 which engage the yarn extending from the yarn guide and draw it across the top of the dial cam cap 14 but beneath a plate 27 until it engages a heated wire 46 which severs the yarn by a searing action. The wire 46 extends into the groove formed between the upstanding teeth 18 and the edge 23 of the cam cap 14. A suction nozzle 28 is secured to the plate 27 and serves to hold the ends of the yarns after they have been severed.
