Abstract

1,005,906. Spray-producers. J. H. HOLLAND CO. Jan. 14, 1964 [Jan. 14, 1963], No. 1595/64. Heading B2F. An apparatus, suitable for spraying a liquid such as asphalt, comprises an inlet conduit 46 feeding liquid to an input manifold 36, a conduit 58 adapted to recirculate liquid from an outlet manifold 48, a valve body housing 12 provided with inlet and outlet passages 34a and 34b communicating with the manifolds 36 and 48 respectively,a spray nozzle 86 having a fluid passageway 88, and a rotatable frustoconical valve member 60 provided with passages 94, 96 which are designed to place the inlet passage 34a selectively in fluid communication with either the outlet passage 34b or the spray nozzle passageway 88. The passageway 88 is provided with a restriction 90 and the outlet is in the form of a diametrical slot 92 which forms a fan-shaped spray. A spring 74 biases the valve 60 against a frusto-conical surface 30 in the housing 12 to provide a fluid-tight seal and the stem 62 of each valve is connected to an actuating lever arm 80. The gang bar 100 connecting the arms 80 is adapted to be moved so as to operate all the valves simultaneously by a fluid-operated piston and cylinder device, Fig. 3 (not shown). The width of the spray may be adjusted by turning off one or more of the valves and two or more spray bars may be pivotally interconnected by a hinge. By-pass passages may be formed in the housing 12 to ensure that hot asphalt under pressure is always flowing through the recirculation conduit to prevent clogging &c.
