Abstract

1,123,256. Valves. SHORT BROS & HARLAND Ltd. 25 Aug., 1966 [2 Sept., 1965], No. 37575/65. Heading F2V. A spool valve controlling the flow from an inlet 11 to an outlet 12 or vice-versa comprises a land portion 26 whose width is less than the diameter of the port 12 and whose diameter is less than the diameter of bore 17. The land portion 16 is separated from a land portion 28 by a section 24 of reduced diameter. When the valve is closing or opening the port, the portion 26 allows pressure to be fed to the section 24 so that the spool is substantially pressure balanced as regards lateral forces. As shown, the spool may be a multiway valve. Instead of the diameter of the land being less than the diameter of the bore, a leakage path may be provided by a slot or orifice across the width of the land or by a combination of slot and reduced diameter.
