Abstract

1,005,587. Mixing fluids. BARMER MASCHINENFABRIK A.G.and ONDERZOEKINGSINSTITUUT RESEARCH N.V. March 30, 1962 [April 12, 1961], No. 12404/62. Heading B1C. Apparatus for mixing fluids comprises a tubular casing 1 in which passages having repeated changes of cross-sectional area and size are formed by inserting therein a stack of flow dividing members as 12-16 having channels by means of which the fluid is formed into streams which are repeatedly divided and recombined. The casing has a fixed end 2 and a removable end 6 having central passageways 5, 11 which are circular at the outer ends and square at the inner ends which bear on the flow-dividing members. The latter are located by dowels 17 and clamped between the ends 2, 6 initially by screws 10 and finally by mounting bolts passed through the passages 4, 7. Each flow-dividing member has two channels 18, 19 which are square at one end as seen in Fig. 2a and taper to rectangular openings at the other end (see Fig. 2c) ; in use they are clamped so that adjacent rectangular openings intersect at 90 degrees, and a spacer 25 may be used so that the distance S is equal to the side of one of the square end openings. The members may be of steel, porcelain or glass and may be cemented or welded instead of clamped. The apparatus may be combined with a screw extruder for moulding thermoplastics.
