Abstract
A cold-worked aluminium-magnesium alloy article containing 4-8% Mg with balance, except for optional alloying elements, such as at least one of 0.1-1% Mn, 0.1-0.25% Cr, 0.1-1% Zn, 0.05-0.2% Ti and 0.001-0.05% Be, and incidental impurities, e.g. up to 0.2% Cu and up to 0.5% each of Fe and/or Si, being Al, is made by hot-working a pre-heated body of the alloy, e.g. an ingot heated to 8-0-1050 DEG F., preferably with intermediate annealing at 600-800 DEG F. for 1-4 hours, cold-working it with at least 20% reduction in cross-section, heating the cold-worked product at 400-525 DEG F. for 2-24 hours to precipitate the Al-Mg constituent uniformly within the grain fragments, cooling to room temperature and cold-working the product with at least 10% reduction in cross-section. The tensile properties of the final product may be stabilized by heating to 150-350 DEG F. for 1/2 -10 hours. Hotworking may be effected by rolling, forging, extruding or pressing, and cold-working by rolling, drawing or pressing up to 500 DEG F.
